About the Co-operative British Youth Film Academy

The Co-operative British Youth Film Academy (BYFA) creates professional standard feature films by linking experienced freelancers and seasoned actors with the talent of the next generation bridging the gap between education and employment.

The BYFA was set up to give students in education experience of working on a professional film set. All too often in the film and TV industry (and many other creative industries) great applicants are turned away due to a lack of hands on experience. Unfortunately it can be difficult for a student with educational responsibilities to arrange the necessary work experience and even then it’s hard to guarantee they’ll learn anything useful.

At the BYFA we offer unparalleled opportunities for students in education to get this hands on experience in an industry renowned for its competitive nature and barriers to entry. We offer training and development in areas not only relevant to Film and TV production, but that also promote life skills and professional etiquette in a modern working environment.

In some cases we have even managed to provide a move straight into the industry with our top level graduate students getting jobs as a direct result of being involved in our projects.

Students can get involved with the BYFA by signing up for our summer school or through the numerous activities run in conjunction with our member colleges.

The BYFA is proud to be a Mutual Society (Co-operative) and is currently partnered to the Co-operative Group ltd.
